School Exclusion and Summer Riots School exclusion is a worrying issue that needs to be addressed. In reference to the established statistics on summer strikes, after examination of a proportion of the 10-17 year olds brought before the courts, among all the rioting students, 45 percent were whites, 30 percent were blacks, 5 percent Asians and 4 percent from mixed race. The analysis further established that most of the pupils ailed from poor families. 64 percent of the students involved in the riots lived in deprived places, in the country. In addition, the students brought before the courts had exceptional needs. The department of education acknowledges that there was eminent occurrence of school exclusion among the pupils brought before the court. ‘Rioting students within school setting’ Exclusion is materially and socially established. Exclusion has substituted the older phrases of expulsion and suspension which were the approaches for elimination of unruly students from school. Exclusion of students from school has repercussions that widen outside education to the capability for the young individuals to take part entirely in the general public later on. This acts as punishment for those students who go against the rules and regulations of school settings. Recently, a study on socially excluded students and pupils in United Kingdom showed that they were not enrolled in any education institution, had no education, employment and training qualifications, live on state assistances and engrossed in minor crimes. This estrangement from training and schooling attributes to educational, social or emotional problems that were not adequately addressed in their early years of education. In the summer riots, young people looted stalls and corporations. Such acts are beyond reasonable doubt contrary to the penal code and subject to punishment. The young people are “outside the social mainstream and live in a culture at odds with any cannons of proper behaviours”. One of the primary roles of educational institutions is to bring up a morally upright society. Since the institutions cannot condone such unethical behaviours; the only solution is always to eliminate the indiscipline students from the institutions. Education institutions should heighten discipline among the students through setting up standards of behavior. The schools should also review their behavioural standards and policies and publicize to the students and parents. Once a student is found with indiscipline cases, he or she should be reprimanded, removed from the class, lose privileges or a letter send to the parents or guardians. The teachers should employ physical punishment in stopping a student from hurting him or herself, causing serious disturbance or damaging property. The students brought before the court deserved it. Though the youths feel that they have been disregarded for a long time, this should not justify their actions. Because of the lack of employment, the disadvantaged youths lack social structures to improve their lives. The rioters and looters justified themselves by asserting that they could only rationalize their poverty by hitting the powerful, rich corporations. Poverty played a part in the riots. According to Mrs. Martins, a local high school teacher, young people are most of the time rampant when their issues of concern are not addressed. Students’ welfare is a significant issue of concern. Students consider rioting as the only way to air their grievances and in the process loot people’s businesses and damage people’s property. One third of all the pupils who had been brought before the court faced exclusion from school for the past year. This astonishing figure portrays a real insight into a future where students miss out on education all in all and end up frustrated by poverty. School exclusion is a worrying issue that needs to be addressed. The police against rioting students the society kicking students Education is the key to a better life. Though there has been an increased rate of school exclusions, this is not a legitimate approach to solving the issues that affect the students. The principal requirement for maintenance of the pupils and students in school is an appropriate level of support from experts in handling challenges facing young people. Most of educational institutions are set up on strict regulations and procedures. They pursue the core business of an institution, to teach and produce results but lack welfare services and facilities. In the event that students protests in such a school against welfare services, their grievances are not put into consideration. Schools have opted to exclusion when a student is indiscipline. Exclusion is not a solution to the issues affecting students. The struggling students require a direct contact with the people who are willing to help them. The society needs to be conscious about the issues that young people go through. Instead of solving the issues that affect the youths, the society ends up beating and dealing with rioting students roughly. Consequently, the society contributes to school exclusion. A child raised by a single alcoholic parent will result to use of drugs and be excluded from school. The society needs to build a strong relationship with the students to reduce social exclusion. Young people feel alienated from the society especially when unemployed. School exclusion leads to unemployment and alienation. The society needs to consider how such a dilemma can be solved. The society should consider coming up with initiatives involving the youths to help them become better people. The government should try to come up with legislation that protects the rights of children. This safe guards a child from abuse by the parent and society at large. Such Legislations i.e. foster care will protect the child from poor upbringing and harsh responses from the society. Educational institutions, on the other hand, should consider the magnitude of the offenses committed by the students before granting the student exclusion. Minor offenses such as breaking uniform rules, dying hair and chewing gum and wearing jewelry should not be subject to exclusion. In addition, the institutions should try to understand the reasons driving the student to such acts. In addition, the society blames the police for the summer riots and looting. The police force should try to understand the issues that befoul the young people and address them. Lack of opportunities for the young people is one of the major attributes. Instead, the police opt to deal roughly with the rioting students. This not only leaves the student feeling alienated but also increases the rate of rioting and looting incidences. Children are precious gifts that need great care. Read More
