The Total Lunar Eclipses A total eclipse occurs when the whole Moon passes through the umbra of the shadow, as the Moonrevolves. A linear eclipse happens when there is a full Moon. Alan MacRobert wrote this article in 2014 in the Sky & Telescope magazine (Sky & Telescope 44). He stated that North America would get a late night total Moon eclipse on April 14 to 15 and October 7 to 8 in 2014. The last time America had a total eclipse was back in 2011 (Sky & Telescope 44).Alan MacRobert outlines five stages that occur before a total lunar eclipse happens (Sky & Telescope 45).

The first phase is called penumbral stage where the leading edge of the Moon enters penumbra of the earth. It is hard to see this stage because of the weakness of the outer penumbra shading. The second stage is a partial eclipse where the leading eastern edge of the Moon slips into the earth’s umbra where there is no direct sunlight. This stage is observable where a deeper night seems to fall with many stars. The third phase is total eclipse stage which begins when the Moon’s last rim enters the umbra.

In this stage, the sun is entirely hidden. However, the Moon still glows red or orange at the time from the light comes from earth’s sunrises and sunsets at that particular time. The fourth stage is another partial eclipse where the Moon continues to revolve, and events unfold reversely. The leading edge of the Moon re-appears into sunlight ending total eclipse. The fifth phase penumbra shading where Moon comes out from the umbra and becomes a full Moon (Sky & Telescope 45).ConclusionThe article is informative and uses descriptive language making it easy to understand.

This topic of Eclipse is ongoing where several eclipses are still expected to happen. I would recommend this article to anyone because it has easy terminologies and in addition it has detailed research.Works CitedSky & Telescope. "The 2014 Total Lunar Eclipses."
