The imagination of a young girl such as Mary Shelley formulating a story such as Frankenstein is unbelievable. However, Mary communicates the inspiration behind her success in a few conclusive words. Though Mary claims that she has an averse nature when it comes to expressing herself in print, it seems that she was inspired to write Frankenstein because it was a continuation of an initial production (Mary, 2014). She says that Frankenstein is an appendage of a former production. By writing Frankenstein, she wanted to confine her topics and themes to her former production that had similar themes. Precisely, she wrote the story to maintain the thematic flow of her authorship. She claims that she could barely accuse herself of personal meddling (Mary, 2014). Her statement indicates that the urge to be original in her writing inspired her into composing an exceptional story that depicted the real nature of man during the age of technological advancement.

The novel, Frankenstein, has a substantial impact on its immediate audiences. She wanted her popular audience to experience the influence of technology on culture and human nature. By being so original in her creation of a fictional scientific invention, she wanted her audience to experience the extraordinary tragic feeling derived from the detrimental effects of technology. She wanted her audience to experience the cruelty of science. Through the interaction with her audience, she passed the message that scientific knowledge is not always friendly to man. The way man uses it determines its real nature and its potential impacts.

Providence Learning acknowledges that the novel converses with the audiences on various themes that were relevant to the society during the enlightenment period. It explains the context in which Mary wrote the novel. The themes indicated by the Providence Learning touches on science humanity, human character, and life (Providence Learning, 2014). It reveals the real nature of human beings in the society during the revolutionary period. In the age of enlightenment when the industrial revolution was at peak, man deemed himself as a machine that could manipulate the earth and make it as he desired. Man had the perception that he was a machine and that he could use his power to satisfy his needs and accomplish his objectives. The increasing technological advancement at that age furthered the perception of man about himself.

Mary also covered the theme of characterization. Through the revelation of the characters of Lord Byron and Percy Byssche Shelley in Frankenstein, she depicted the real nature of man. The characters were isolated, remote, and cold. The themes also touched on man’s imagination. The story captures the imagery of water and new creation that illustrate how she saw the world moving to a new period (Providence Learning, 2014). Additionally, the theme of religion also manifests itself in the novel. During the phase of the industrial revolution when the use of science was at peak, man sidelined the existence of God. With the technology in his hands, he considered himself as a supreme being. Together with other themes, Mary’s novel clearly reveals sensitive thematic concerns that synchronize with the status of science during her time.
