The purpose of this research study is to determine whether or not the high level of violent crime in the London Borough of Lambeth is linked to the poor relations between the police and young black men in Lambeth. A review of the literature indicates that young black men are more likely to become either victims or offenders of violent crime. The literature also makes a connection between ineffective policing and the rate of violent crime among ethnic minorities in areas like Lambeth where there is a high level of crime among young black men.

In order to determine whether or not there is a link between the high level of violent crime among young black men and their relationship with police in Lambeth, a mixed-method approach to the study was taken. In this regard, a quantitative method was used in which data was collected from a sample of 38 young black men in Lambert between the ages of 18 and 25 by the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire collected information about the respondent’s experiences with and attitudes toward police.

Qualitative data was collected by virtue of semi-structured in-depth interviews with 10 black men between the ages of 18 and 25. The interviews were structured to obtain more in-depth and detailed information about the respondent's experiences with and attitudes toward the police in Lambeth. . The second chapter presents a review of the literature. The third chapter presents the research methodology. The fourth chapter provides the results and analysis and the fifth chapter provides the conclusion to this study.

Table of Contents Chapter One Introduction Data reported in the literature reveals that black men, in general, are disproportionately responsible for the crime. In addition, black men are reportedly more likely to be victims of violent crimes than white men. For example, it has been reported in the literature that while 40.8 out of 1,000 white males are victims of crime while 51.2 out of every 1,000 black males are victims of crime. Homicide is reportedly the leading cause of death among young black men (Guarino-Ghezzi & Trevino, 2010).
