Extract of sample "AIDS Ravaged Africa"

Dear Friends and Colleagues, We often hear about “AIDS-ravaged Africa” and it is easy to imagine that the epidemic affects everyone equally and that it is a mindless killer, unable to be constrained by any effort.  Education can be a silver bullet to AIDS spreading: people who have proper sex education know it’s dangers and how easy it is to prevent its spread. More importantly, however, women who are better educated have a better chance of supporting themselves and not relying on sex (either through prostitution or more informal relationships where one person supports the other in exchange for sexual favors).

Mauritania, however, with 20% better education numbers, is having the first steps of containing its AIDS outbreak (World Bank). In America, the ratio of girls to boys in education is actually higher than one because of better female attendance at the post-secondary level, and when this statistic is compared to the best countries in Africa, which have ratios of .6:1, it’s clear why Africa is suffering.
