The Hunger Games is a novel by Suzanne Collins published in 2008. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the author writes through the perspective of a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen who is a citizen of Panem, a country situated in North America. An advanced metropolis known as the capital has political control over the entire nation.
The Hunger Games is an important annual event whereby a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from every one of the 12 surrounding districts are chosen through a lottery to compete in a grand battle to the death.
Summary of the Story
The nation of Panem was established within the ruins of North America after an apocalyptic occurrence. This affluent capitol enslaves each of the 12 surrounding districts and exploits their natural resources. There was once a failed rebellion that resulted in the annihilation of the 13th district. As a result, the capitol initiated a punishment whereby a boy and a girl aged between 12 and 18 from every district get selected to participate in The Hunger Games. In this contest, the tributes must fight to death within an outdoor stage until only one is left standing.
16-year-old Katniss Everdeen who hails from district 12, narrates the story. The male tribute goes by the name Peeta Mellark. He is Katniss’ former schoolmate who once assisted her with bread when her family had nothing to eat.
A day before The Hunger Games, Peeta reveals his love for Katniss. At first, she does not believe it but later accepts it as a true confession. The games begin, and almost half of the tributes get massacred as they battled over supplies and weapons. Katniss refuses to flee as earlier advised by Haymitch and this almost leads to her death. She tries to hide in the woods, but an artificial fire drives her towards other tributes. Eventually, she is captured by careers tributes who were seemingly in cahoots with Peeta. Rue tries to rescue Katniss but gets killed in the process.
A change of rules is then announced allowing tributes from the same district to fight as a pair. Katniss teams up with Peeta and ends up becoming the last two survivors. The rules are again changed to pit Katniss and Peeta against one another for a thrilling finale. In defiance, both Katniss and Peeta prepare to consume the toxic “nightlock” berries. Upon realizing this, the game makers declare both of them as victors and receive a hero’s welcome back in district 12. However, Peeta discovers that her actions were a calculated plan to gain sympathy. Katniss, upon receiving warning of impending punishment for her defiance is unsure about the future.
