Thesis statement: In the novel The Kite Runner, the novelist (Khaled Hosseini) makes use of redemption as an important theme because the protagonist’s (Amir) attempt to rescue his friend’s son (Sohrab) is symbolic of redemption originating from guilty consciousness.

Significance of the theme of redemption

The work primarily deals with the protagonist’s (Amir) bond with his friend (Hassan). To be specific, Hassan’s presence helped Amir to keep himself away from problems in his life. In the work by Hosseini (2008), the speaker states that “I thought of the street fights we’d get into when we were kids, all the times Hassan used to take them on for me, two against one, sometimes three against one” (p.223). But Amir was not ready to go beyond the limits of his reputed family. When Hassan was victimized by bullies, Amir considers that he must break his friendship with Hassan. On the other side, Hassan is portrayed as a brave human being who is ever ready to fight for friendship. One can see that the novelist proclaims that cowards try to escape from reality, but brave people choose death instead of life as slaves.

Amir’s decision to flee from his motherland was right because the same changed his life. Still, he knows that he cheated his dearest friend. The third part of the work deals with Amir’s attempt to save Hassan’s son. One can see that the grass root level reason behind Amir’s redemption is his guilty consciousness. For instance, Amir’s return to his native place, his encounter with his enemy, and his effort to save Hassan’s son are symbolic of redemption.

At the same time, Amir knows that he is responsible for the problems faced by Hassan and his family. Earlier, Amir was not aware of the seriousness of his deeds. To be specific, Amir thought that Hassan must suffer the problems because his social status is low. Still, he realizes the fact that he is a coward and his negative attitude towards friendship is the reason behind the problems faced by his friend and his family. Now, Amir cannot help his friend because he is a vague memory in the real world. Still, Amir tries to help Hassan’s son because he feels guilty consciousness. So, the idea of redemption in the work is symbolic of the protagonist’s change and its aftereffects.

Summing, the motivation behind the protagonist’s deeds to save his friend’s son is redemption and guilty consciousness. One can see that the novelist makes use of the protagonist to prove that some people are not ready to face reality. They never try to give importance to relationships beyond their private circles. The problems faced by Hassan and his family originate from Amir’s selfishness. In short, the writer makes use of the main characters to prove that redemption cannot solve all the problems in life, but timely response can.
