Drama is part and parcel of literature, as evidenced by scholars and experts who have carried out extensive and intensive research in the works done in the drama sector. Plays are part of the drama regarding this argument.” Relying on explicit messages to audiences, a production director has to use both technical and performance elements” (PUSPITARINI 3). In analyzing the use of both ‘technical and performance’ aspects in making sure the performance of a play focuses on the major themes depicted by the scriptwriter, a production manager has to use both technical and performance literary elements. Focusing on both ‘technical and performance’ literary aspects in the play Trifles by Susan Glaspell will provide extensive knowledge on the use of these literary elements. Secondly, it is used in supporting the various themes the author depicts.
Technical literary elements
As evidenced and postulated by scholars in the field of literature, ‘technical’ features are core to the success of any given play across the globe. As a production director for the play Trifles, I would focus on these literary elements since they are core to the success of the play’s performance. The technical aspects I will use in making the performance of the play include;
Props are part and parcel of the adequate performance of any given play. “Actors of a play have to use various props in performing their given roles in the performance of any given authored play” (Herrera Medalle 344). As a production director of the play Trifles, I would actively use the props mentioned by the author in performance since they are attributed to the various themes the author depicts. “The title of the play is Trifles, which is an evident movement to the pastime that nuances play inner the presentation. Susan Glaspell’s one displaying play happens in a farmhouse, where regulation execution authorities investigate a murder” (PUSPITARINI 4).
As the male authorities search for insinuations upstairs, the two girls first ground piece collectively the reaction to the reader regarding the usage of symptoms from the chaotic Kitchen that the guys dismissed. The play closes with the two women, Mrs. Dies down and Mrs. Robustness, disguising their exposures from the guys in view that they sense empathy (and even compassion for) Mrs. Wright. “What this quick play desires size and cast, the unique preciseness of props makes up for. This underscores the concern of the play, as strengthened by means of the title – Trifles” (Herrera Medalle 343). The line “women are acclimated with demanding over burns via of time” accommodates with the quit that the ladies who fear over these burns via of time will be the ones who find out the justification in the awful conduct and ultimately pick out the desire to maintain up calm in cost to maybe retailer Mrs. Wright. Thusly, props as nuances now not sincerely go about as particular segments of the play, but they in like manner invigorate an entire problem of Trifles: the criticalness of marriage values and the ones who truly watch them.
Through the view of the little nuances in the Kitchen, the two girls can disentangle the manner of questioning in the terrible behavior. The destruction that the guys forget thinking about the way that Mrs. Wright “didn’t have the homemaking sense” winds up being massive in mild of the reality that “(Herrera Medalle 347)women are acquainted with disturbing over-burns through the accepted societal norms. Along these lines, the exercise of nuances in the play is a central one. Since ch, or rather, trifles, are so crucial to the plot, the stage headings of Trifles list a large range of props. For instance, the play requires a rocker, a little seat, and any variety of little kitchen things.
At the beginning of the play, several symbolic features are used to depict the Kitchen’s chaotic nature. “Unwashed skillet underneath the sink, a phase of bread backyard the bread-box, a drying towel on the table” ((Herrera Medalle 343), are among the several symbolic features use by the author in depicting the above argument. Later on, the stitching scraps and case, in a similar fashion as the damaged birdcage, are large matters in the publicity of expectation and the enthusiastic pinnacle of the scene. Wright.
Hence, props as ‘technical’ literary elements are core to the successful performance of particular segments of the drama, and therefore as a performance director, I will use them extensively.
The various happenings in the play Trifles majorly rely on the use of lighting as a literary element. In using light, as a production director, I will ensure that the audience captures the time various happenings in the play take place. “An example is the time detectives investigating the murder case pay a visit to the widower (Mrs. Wright), in the wee hours of the night. In using lighting as a technical literary device, as a production director of a crew mandated with acting the play, I will use lighting to depict the time the detectives arrived at Mrs. Wright’s premises” (Herrera Medalle 345). This segment is not the only scene where lighting is core to sending the author’s intended messages to an audience in the performance of the play. Different props used in the play should have different ‘lighting’ to depict various establishments per the themes of the poem. The fridge should be powered on to send the message that Wright’s Family was successful.
At the beginning of the play, the author depicts the scene in which the play takes place in describing the place the drama takes place. As a production director of a performance crew of the play, I will ensure I will use the depicted scheme as a technical element since it majors on the themes focused on by the author. “The Kitchen in the now abandoned farm now-abandoned Wright, a gloomy kitchen, and left without having been put in order — the walls covered with a faded wallpaper” (Herrera Medalle 347). Among many others, these scenes can be depicted to an audience using the technical element that regards scenery in conjunction with props. All in all, these ‘technical’ literary elements are core to the success of the play Trifles’ performance by Susan Glaspell. As a production director, I will apply these technical literary elements since they are part and parcel of the significant themes Susan, the author focuses on.
I will apply various performance elements in the performance of the play Trifles as a production director. Among these are;
Pacing has been used as a performance element to depict intimidation and uncertainty. The performance of the county Sheriff can be attributed to performance as a literary element. The Sheriff, the County Attorney, and Hale (one of the characters in the play) use pacing as a literary performance element in depicting uncertainty and justice, which are core themes that the author majored on. “COUNTY ATTORNEY ( crossing down to the left of the table )” (Guswanto and Lailatul 31). Besides using pacing as a performance element, I would also apply in using gestures (including facial expressions and gestures) as performance elements in passing on messages to the audience of the play.
“SHERIFF ( looking about ): It’s just about the same. When it dropped below zero last night I thought I’d better send Frank out this morning to make a fire for us — ( sits right of the center table )” (Guswanto and Lailatul 31). The performance elements used by the Sheriff by using movement as a literary element are in accordance with the themes majored by the author of the play. In depicting that the Sheriff looked around the Kitchen, it shows how detectives gather evidence and that men rarely believe women in murder cases.
The tension is palpable all over Trifles. There is the tension of the crime committed. “There is tension from the women on what will be the fate of Mrs. Wright. The women are also tense around the men, who clearly do intimidate the ladies. The ladies, friends of Mrs. Wrights are nervous throughout the interrogation by the county attorney and the Sheriff” (Guswanto and Lailatul 29). I will use tension as a production feature, in making the performance of the play a success.
Emotions are part and parcel of the performance of a given play, as postulated by scholars in the field of literature. In using emotional features outlined by the author in the play Trifle, I, as a production director, will make the play a success since “most of the emotions shown by the characters playing different roles in the play focus on the major themes focused on by the author” (Guswanto and Lailatul 26). As a production director for the play Trifles, I will use the emotional features and clues outlined by the author to make the performance of the play successful. As aforementioned, all the emotional scenes are applied by the author in accordance with the major themes focused on the author in the play.
In conclusion, as a production director of the live performance of the play Trifles, I would apply the above outlined technical and performance elements in making the performance of the play a success. In using these literary devices, among many others, the performance of the play by my crew will effectively send the intended messages to the audience.
